Eugene Cubillo’s 10th solo exhibition titled ‘Imperfections’ opens on April 1 at Kalyehon Café

Featuring mixed media artworks that delve into personal experience, societal commentary, and Filipino culture, Eugene Cubillo, a prominent Filipino visual artist, opens his 10th solo show, “Imperfections,” beginning April 1 at Kalyehon Café, Imus, Cavite.

“Imperfections” features a curated collection of Eugene Cubillo’s paintings and mixed media works from 2022 to the present, exploring the inherent beauty in human flaws. The exhibition posits that imperfections are not deficits, but rather essential qualities that define our humanity. Cubillo employs the warm, earthy tones of rust, along with techniques like defacing, distorting, and overlaying paint, to visually represent these relatable imperfections.

Cubillo’s art masterfully blends diverse media—acrylics, oils, graphite, and found objects like playing cards—to embody life’s intricate layers. Through a fusion of abstract and figurative elements, he offers a novel perspective within contemporary Filipino art. His work invites viewers to a reflective space, seamlessly weaving personal narratives with broader societal commentaries, fostering a connection with audiences both locally and globally.

Through a blend of storytelling and abstract forms, Eugene Cubillo uses his art as a visual diary, processing and communicating his thoughts and emotions. His artistic endeavors have led to numerous exhibitions both locally and internationally, with his work showcased in countries such as South Korea, Italy, Hungary, and the United Arab Emirates.

Eugene Cubillo’s artistic career is marked by significant accolades, beginning with the NCCA Diwa ng Sining 2002 Artista ng Bayan where he was among the top three winners. More recently, in 2020, he received the Ateneo Art Gallery AAG-Marciano Galang Acquisition Prize, resulting in his selected works being featured in an exhibition and added to the gallery’s permanent collection.
