IKEA Philippines: Leading the charge towards a sustainable future

IKEA, the beloved Swedish home furnishing brand, is on a mission to create a better everyday life for people and planet. In the Philippines, Ikano Retail, the franchisee, recently released a report showcasing their progress towards ambitious 2025 sustainability targets. This journey covers inspiring healthy and sustainable living, driving circularity and climate positivity, and fostering a fair and inclusive culture.

Healthy and Sustainable Living

IKEA isn’t just about flatpacks and meatballs. In the Philippines, they’re leading the charge for a greener future, making sustainability accessible and affordable for everyone. Their commitment is clear: over 73% of their products use renewable or recycled materials, from energy-saving bulbs to sustainably sourced furniture.

Last year alone, Filipinos snapped up over 1 million of these eco-friendly options. But IKEA’s impact goes beyond product shelves. Sustainability is woven into their company culture, empowering employees to care for the planet. Over 90% feel equipped to protect our world and actively contribute to a greener future. Their ambitions are big: a 50% plant-based menu in their iconic Swedish restaurant by 2025. They’re well on their way, reaching 33% last year with delicious offerings like the HUVUDROLL plant ball, a tasty alternative to meaty favorites.

Circular & Climate Positive

In the fight for a greener planet, IKEA Philippines isn’t just talk, it’s action. Here’s how they’re closing the loop and reducing waste:

• Giving used furniture a second life. Last year, they rescued and refurbished over 10,880 products, saving millions of pesos and proving their high-quality standards. These “good as new” items re-entered the market, promoting a circular economy.

• Recycling champions. Their innovative system tackles paper and plastic waste, achieving a 61% recycling rate in stores. Food waste? They slashed it by 70% compared to the previous year.

• Electrifying deliveries. Partnering with Mober, an electric vehicle company, IKEA is pushing the boundaries of green transport. Already one-fourth of the way to their 2025 target for EV deliveries, they’re on track to electrify their future.

IKEA Philippines is redefining what it means to be a sustainable retailer. By prioritizing circularity, reducing waste, and embracing electric solutions, they’re proving that good for the planet can be good for business too.

Fair and Inclusive

IKEA has become one of the most beloved brands in the Philippines since it opened in 2021, and while it showcases sustainability best practices for the planet among retail companies, the brand manifests its positive impact in the world by fundamentally being centered on people. IKEA Philippines has also manifested inclusivity from the inside-out, achieving a gender balance in their workforce across their organization, with the gender ratio of 45.9% female and 54.1% male. To create a positive impact in the community, IKEA Philippines maintains its partnership with with social enterprise Rags2Riches (R2R) as a sewing services partner in IKEA Pasay City. Within its operation, R2R had upcycled 4,000 kilograms of scrap fabrics and generated P7 million in revenues from IKEA which directly impacted 250 families.

A Sustainable Future Together

But IKEA’s not just about self-improvement. They’re building a greener ecosystem in the Philippines, partnering with social enterprises to empower local communities. In fact, their proactive approach to sustainability is infectious. IKEA’s success showcases the power of making eco-friendly choices within reach for everyone, inspiring both individuals and other businesses to join the journey towards a greener tomorrow.
