Resorts World Manila puts the Earth to heart for sustainable development

Resorts World Manila’s I Love Earth Council at the forefront of the integrated resort’s drive for sustainable development lead by RWM President and CEO Kingson Sian and COO Stephen Reilly (Center) with (L-R) RWM Director for Risk Management Maria Ryna Inocencio, Hilton Manila Director for Operations Iulai Sa’u, Marriott International Multi-Property VP – Philippines and Marriott Manila General Manager Bruce Winton, Hotel Okura Manila General Manager Jan Marshall, Sheraton Manila General Manager Anna Liza Vergara, Holiday Inn Express Manila Newport City General Manager Elpidio Beloso Jr.

It takes heart to stand for what one believes in, and for the country’s premier lifestyle and tourism destination, Resorts World Manila (RWM), putting the Earth into the heart of every individual, community and business is the key for sustainability. As the first fully integrated resort in the country, RWM is taking an integrated approach to create a collective impact for sustainable development with its property-wide “I Love Earth” program.

“The ‘I Love Earth’ program is based on our vision to “repurpose the world through sustainable living.” It has to come from the heart, because it often involves hard decisions and sacrifices that we can only make if we are truly committed. Sustainable development addresses global issues that affect all of us, especially our most vulnerable local communities. We have to address it by working together—as a company, a community, an industry, and as one human race. But first, each one of us has to take a stand, and say: “I Love Earth.” Kingson Sian, RWM President and CEO shares the belief that started the movement towards sustainability for the integrated resort.

RWM has become one of the Philippines’ top tourist destinations with two main wings, the Newport Grand Wing and the Newport Garden Wing, that are one-stop, non-stop entertainment destinations with unmatched world-class thrills. RWM is also home to the most number of hotel room keys in a single property from five international hotel brands. The commanding reach of RWM, then must be translated to collective action towards a common goal. RWM established the I Love Earth council to organize efforts and maximize its impact for the greatest good of the planet.

Bruce Winton, Multi-Property Vice President – Philippines, Marriott International and General Manager, Marriott Manila has been appointed as the Chairman of the I Love Earth Council. To GM Winton, “‘I Love Earth’ is not just a slogan. It’s a concrete framework with specific goals. Collectively, we brought leaders together from all the hotel groups in the resort, from Hilton, Holiday Inn Express, Hotel Okura, Marriott, Sheraton, and of course, Travellers International Hotel Group themselves, to work together and commit to these goals. We believe that what gets measured, gets done. What we also want to do is really involve all of our stakeholders, both within our own community, and within the industry, and work together to commit to achieving progress towards sustainable development goals. We hope the others will join us in saying, “I Love Earth,” and putting that commitment into action.”

Over the past two years, RWM has embarked on a journey to revisit and reassess most of its operations to make improvements where necessary and changes for the better. This is also where the opportunity for I Love Earth began. Environment Impact and Energy efficiency measures were put in place across the property. From solar installation to district cooling, boiler, and descaling systems, to efficient water flow rates, RWM’s own ecosystem of properties pitched in to create more environmentally-friendly operations.

Earlier in the year, RWM, through its partner hotels, has expanded on its almost decade-long focus on sustainable sourcing with the Cage-Free Egg initiative in March. RWM’s cage-free initiative ultimately aims to use only cage-free eggs across all hotels, and food and beverage (F&B) outlets in the IR by 2025 as part of I Love Earth’s Sustainable Culinary program with the Healthy, Responsible and Sustainable Sourcing of RWM’s  world-class offerings.

Now, to further affirm its commitment to sustainable practice, RWM is ratifying its partnership with ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. (AFI) for its material recovery programs. AFI has been a longstanding partner of RWM for its various corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environmentally-sustainable operations.

In a signing ceremony witnessed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Central Office Hazardous Waste Management Section Chief, Engr. Geri-Geronimo Sañez, RWM adopts into its sustainable operations the proper handling and disposal of three waste materials through the Bantay Langis, Waste Electronics and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) Recovery, and Bantay Baterya Projects. The symbolic ceremony was attended by representatives of RWM’s I Love Earth Council in a show of commitment, as well as AFI leadership on May 18 at the COL|LAB 2F Sheraton Manila.
